When you run the deep clean of a Canon Pixma IP 1600, where does the ink go after it's used for cleaning?

If it forces a lot of ink through the print head to clean it, that ink has to go somewhere afterwards. But it doesn't go on the paper till you do a nozzle check. It seems sinister to me. Is it aculating old cleaning ink somewhere inside?
