Does Islam forbid elections and democracy?

Not the Koran and main stream Islam does not really say much about political systems; Turkey is a predominately Muslim country has free elections, religious freedom and even close ties with Israel. The taliban are extremist and believe in religious rule and dictatorship but the view they have of Islam is not what most Muslims believe.
