IS General Anesthesia Safe for two year old?

Hi, my 23 month old son has a hydrocele on the right teste area. I am fully aware of the pros and cons of this surgery that is scheduled two weeks from now. Of course my husband and I want what's best for our son, but I am currently being treated for anxiety disorder and the mere THOUGHT of my helpless child being put to sleep scares me. I have little to know faith in the medical field as it is, but to now face the fear of having to trust them FULLY with my baby's life, after watching my grandmother die two years ago due to a medical mistake that we are currently pursuing...as you may imagine, I am a giant ball of nerves. I need someone to keep it REAL with me and tell me the ups and downs of giving a child GA. And please, I am not a young or naive mother, I am aware that if the side effects outweigh the risks and so on and so forth...just needing some honest answers and possibly a bit of reurance from someone in this field.
