Does the German Shepard get killed in I Am Legend?

I know Im a freak but I can't go see a movie where a Dog is tortured and killed by Vamps. I don't know if thats what happens but my boyfriend wants to go and Im watching the trailer and well I had a Shepard and it would break my heart seeing an animal suffer. Humans not so much.
